Throughout much of my earlier life, I struggled to fit into academic and professional roles that didn't align with my true self. I’ve worn many metaphorical hats in the process. After receiving a definitive diagnosis of type 1 bipolar disorder in my late 20s, coupled with some profound revelations brought on by mania, I discovered that art was the one thing I could consistently engage in while maintaining relative mental stability. Now, a few years later, it still feels like the best form of medicine, second only to traditional treatment. I find that I thrive when I’m immersed in something absurd, and that’s where I flourish.
I began my artistic journey with abstract acrylic paintings, but I found my drawing skills lacking. To improve, I immersed myself in pen and ink techniques. Initially, art served as a chaotic, abstract outlet for my unmedicated mind. However, after starting medication, I found the ability to focus and truly learn for the first time. My illustrations and passion for mark-making are deeply influenced by manga artists such as Junji Ito, Go Nagai, and Kentaro Miura. My appreciation for color and abstraction likely stems from the works of Dale Chihuly. The element of absurdity, which I cherish most, is inspired by artists like Ralph Steadman and Jim Moir. Add a dash of cosmic dread, and you’ve got a Branden sundae.
I won’t overwhelm you with constant emails to promote my work, but I may share updates on my projects, free digital art, some classic nonsense and tomfoolery.
